Thoughts on the Texas Speakers Race

Okay, I did some research and this is what scares me about this speakers race...

Of the 21 who are against Straus as of today only 6 were on his original list of 128 supporters from just after the election.

The other 15 were not Straus supporters to begin with.  That means the pledges to Straus are down to 122... still a huge victory for Straus.

In fact, not a single one of the Straus defections has come since Tan Parker on around Nov 12th.  That is 3 weeks since we've made any impact on the overwhelming support for Straus' re-election.

Sure, Bill Zedler and Debbie Riddle officially announced after Tan but they had both previously indicated they were not sure who they were supporting so I don't count them as recent defections.

In order for me to feel more hopeful about unseating Straus (and for the record I think he should go for reason's I'll discuss in a future post) we need to get 47 of the pledged Straus supporters to defect. At the rate we're going its going to take a miracle for that to happen before session starts.

Here is a list of the 6 defections and when they announced.

Bryan Hughes - Nov 8
Debbie Riddle - Requested her name to be removed some time on or before Nov. 11th  Click to see article
Bill Zedler - Questioned if he had offered support for 2011 - same article as above
Ken Paxton - Nov 11
Jodie Laubenberg - Nov 11
Tan Parker - Nov 12

That's All Folks.  Not a single defection since then.

This can be won but it's going to take a coordinated effort and money.
